In May 2024, the Ministry of Education mentioned that school would revert to January again in 2026. Therefore some adjustments would obviously have to be made to the school calendar. Now that we have the school calendar for the 2024/2025 academic year, we put them side by side with the academic calendar for 2023./2024 session to observe the differences.
1. The number of weeks of school session remains the same at 42 weeks. However, for 2024/2025 session, the first two terms have longer weeks of school session without school holiday breaks in between ie 11 + 15 weeks vs 5 + 4 + 12 weeks previously.
2. The total accumulated school holidays for 2023/2024 school year is 9 weeks whereas the total accumulated school holidays for 2024/2025 school year is 7 weeks. (Note that this does not include festive holidays)
3. Mid of Term 3 holidays which coincides with the end of the calendar year is 2 weeks for 2023/2024 session (16.12.2023 to 1.1.2024) and 1 week for 2024/2025 session (21.12.2024 to 29.12.2024). However the end of academic year holidays is the same at 4 weeks for both. For 2024/2025 session, the year end holiday of 4 weeks is just 3 weeks later. Parents planning year end holidays should take note of this.
4. The first day of school in 2023 is 20 March 2023.
The first day of school in 2024 is 11 March 2024.
The first day of school in 2025 is 17 February 2025
The first day of school in 2026 is January 2026
(Note that for purpose of comparison, the dates used above are for schools in Group B ie schools in states which observe Saturday and Sunday as weekend. Calendar year refers to year as stated in calendars whereas academic year refers to school year which covers two years eg Calendar year 2024 is from Jan to Dec 2024. Academic year 2024/2025 is from March 2024 to February 2025)
What do you think of the changes?
